Submissions to Turiya Literary Review (TLR)

What we’re looking for.

Submit your work as a Word document (.docx), and include an author bio written in the third person. If the submission includes translations, also provide a translator bio, each not exceeding 120 words. Include a headshot of the author—and of the translator, if applicable—in JPG format.

 

In the body of the email, include contact information and state the genre, title, and word count (for prose) of the submission, as well as any salient information about you—e.g., previous publications, never before published—or about your piece.

 

We welcome submissions in fiction, poetry, nonfiction, dramatic writing, and translation in all genres.

 

For translations, please confirm that translation rights are available and submit under the genre that best represents the work.

 

We only accept writing that has not been published previously, whether in print or on the web.

 

Please send only one submission at a time, across all genres, including translations. Do not resubmit work, even if it has been revised, unless it has been requested by the editors. Simultaneous submissions are accepted in all genres, but please be sure to withdraw your submission immediately upon acceptance elsewhere. We attempt to respond to submissions within twelve weeks, but it can take longer.

 

We welcome and encourage submissions from writers of every nationality, race, religion, and gender, including writers who have never been affiliated with an MFA program and whose perspectives are often underrepresented in the literary world.

 

Please note that we are currently a non‑paying market; contributors submit their work voluntarily, and no financial compensation is offered at this time.

 

Categories

 

Fiction: We are looking for short stories, short shorts, novellas, novel excerpts (if they can stand alone), and translations. The word limit is 8,000, though most of what we publish is shorter than 5,000 words. Please send only one piece at a time, unless the pieces are very short (under 1,000 words), in which case send up to three. Reminder: do not resubmit a story that you’ve sent in the past unless it has been completely rewritten. Please double-space and include word count on the front page.

 

Poetry: We publish long and short poems, including translations. Please send no more than six poems at once, and upload them as a single file. If you need to withdraw part of your submission, please simply add a note to your submission in Submittable.

 

Nonfiction: We publish a broad range of nonfiction, including interpretive and personal essays, critical reassessments, cultural criticism (art, film, etc.), travel writing, environmental writing, and works in translation. The word limit is 8,000, though most of what we publish is shorter than 5,000 words. Please double-space and include word count on the front page.

 

Dramatic Writing: We are looking for short plays, monologues, and screenplays, up to 5,000 words. Please consider that the work must read well on the page. Please double-space and include word count on the front page or cover letter.

Submissions to Turiya Press

Submissions are currently closed. Our annual reading period is November to March, and we do not accept unsolicited manuscripts outside of those dates.

GENERAL SUBMISSION GUIDELINES:

 

Be sure to follow the specific guidelines for each submission call.

 

There must be no identifying information for the author anywhere on the manuscript, including in the file name or submission title. Manuscripts containing identifying information in any way will be automatically disqualified and any submission fee forfeited.

 

The manuscript in its entirety must be previously unpublished, though it may contain previously published portions. It should contain a majority of new work. Please acknowledge any portions of the manuscript that have been previously published in your cover letter, not within the manuscript itself. Manuscripts that contain acknowledgements will be disqualified.

 

All material in manuscripts must be of the author’s own composition and free from copyright restrictions. We do not accept submissions generated by AI tools or language models.

 

Simultaneous submissions are welcome, but authors must notify us immediately if their work is accepted elsewhere and withdraw it through our submission manager.

 

Manuscripts should be submitted as a .doc or. docx file in a 12-point standard font such as Times New Roman or Georgia, double-spaced, have margins of at least 1 inch, and be paginated. Please include a title page with a total word count and a table of contents, as applicable.

Include a cover letter in the appropriate field in the submission manager (not within the manuscript file itself).

 

In your cover letter, please provide the following information:

 

  • Your contact information (address, phone, email)
  • The manuscript’s title, genre, and word count
  • List of credits for any previously published portions
  • A brief synopsis of the work
  • A brief biography with publishing history, if applicable; include your website address and social media handles
  • Indication if the manuscript is submitted simultaneously and pledge to withdraw it if accepted elsewhere
  • Where you heard about the call for submissions
  • We welcome brief comments on how you see your book in terms of expanding our catalog

 

Any submission that doesn’t follow the guidelines will be disqualified.

SELECTION PROCESS: 

​

Turiya Press conducts reviews during which authors and reader-reviewers are kept anonymous. Multiple reviewers read each manuscript. They are anonymous to one other and unable to read any other reviews. 

 

Submissions cannot be edited once they are submitted. Manuscripts selected for publication will go through an editing process with the editors.

​

Turiya Press does not offer editorial comments on submissions. Editorial relationships with authors are developed once they have signed a contract. Every book accepted for publication receives careful, thorough, and sensitive editing, and necessitates the author’s collaboration and commitment to the process.

 

Turiya Press responds to every submission it receives at the email address furnished with the submission. It can take time, so please be patient.
