Swaying, Flowing

In this luminous collection, Jegadeesh Kumar brings together stories that traverse continents and states of mind: moving from the quiet stretches of America to the wind‑struck islands of the Maldives, from the layered textures of India to speculative worlds shaped by imagination. With prose that is rich, precise, and quietly philosophical, Jegadeesh reveals the subtle tensions and fragile hopes that define the human condition. His mastery of narrative craft allows readers not merely to observe these worlds but to inhabit them fully. Each story opens a door into a realm where emotion, memory, and wonder converge with striking clarity.

A Fine Thread and Other Stories

A Fine Thread and Other Stories is a collection of sixteen translated stories originally written in Tamil by the acclaimed author Jeyamohan. Each story explores rich and intriguing territories, ranging from art's place in spirituality through the dreamy, incredible account of a young monk's search for atonement for his ancestors' curse in 'Shadow Crow', to the ruthless questions thrown at Mahatma Gandhi's integrity and rectitude in 'A Fine Thread'. This collection presents characters in the midst of their personal and global quandaries: we meet two American reporters, who find themselves at the threshold of the Great Russian revolution and the construction of socialism; an obsessed engineer who tries to decipher the conversation of the mountains; a dreamy, native youth who discovers tranquillity in nature; a young girl in search of meaning and exhilaration in this wonder called life. Compellingly narrated, beautifully crafted, and packed with a density of ideas, these stories provide an unflinching glimpse into the kaleidoscopic fictional world of a major Tamil writer of our times

Porkugai Ragasiyam

"What do I hope to achieve in my short stories? Before I begin writing one, there are a few questions I always settle in my mind. What choices do the central characters make when they are placed before competing possibilities? What deeper reasons drive those choices? Why do they allow themselves to be trapped—sometimes even willingly—in difficult circumstances? Using a small incident as an entry point, is it possible to raise questions that gesture toward the complexities of human nature?" Jegadeesh Kumar

Born With the Southern Wind

The seven writers gathered in this anthology represent some of Tamil literary landscape’s most distinctive and enduring voices, each carrying a different timbre, a different moral temperature, a different relationship to the world. Yet taken together, they form a composite portrait of a body of literature learning to breathe in new ways. Taken together, these seven writers form a constellation, each of its stars distinct, each illuminating a different corner of Tamil experience. Their stories do not merely represent the era; they shape our understanding of it. They remind us that literature is not a record of history but a way of feeling its pulse. And as these stories now cross into English, they carry with them the textures, contradictions, and quiet radiances of a literary world that deserves to be read not as regional writing but as part of the global imagination.

The Sound of the Eastern Waves

What distinguishes the group of writers in this anthology is not merely the diversity of their geographies or the range of their themes, but the distinct ways in which each one bends the short‑story form to their own temperament. Their styles do not sit in neat categories, instead they spill into one another, refracting the anxieties and textures of contemporary Tamil life. Reading them together is like listening to a set of voices that share a frequency, each attuned to a different corner of the modern Tamil imagination. To read these stories in English is to enter a world where the local and the global are not opposites but intertwined. It is to recognize that Tamil literature is not a niche tradition but a vital part of the world’s literary ecology. And it is to affirm that translation, far from being a secondary act, is one of the great creative endeavors of our time.
